aww shucks
On Saturday, April 21 beginning at 2 p.m., popular raw bar and restaurant Oyster House (1516 Sansom Street, 215-567-7683) will host their third-annual Shucking Contest, featuring professional oyster shuckers from across Philadelphia competing for a $200 Grand Prize. An amateur shucking contest will follow the professionals, with guests hoping to earn a $100 Oyster House Gift Certificate. Admission to the shucking contest is $5 per person, and includes all the varieties of the shucked oysters as well as access to Oyster House’s bar and a special firkin of a local craft beer, which will be on a pay-as-you-go
basis.
“Oyster shucking is an art, and those who do it well rightly take pride in their ability,” says proprietor and third-generation restaurateur Sam Mink. “Last year, we had nine professional and amateur shuckers, and we can’t wait to see who takes home the prize this year.”
The professional shuckers, including competitors from Oyster House and others from renowned Philadelphia-area seafood houses, will be judged by UWISHUNU.com editor Allison Stadd, WHERE Philadelphia editor Kristina Jenkins, and celebrity photographer HughE Dillon on their speed and accuracy as they shuck their way through two dozen oysters, working in heats of three shuckers at a time. A one-second deduction will be made to each shucker’s overall time for each broken shell or ripped oyster. After a winner is crowned, amateur shuckers will face the same guidelines, working on one dozen oysters each for a chance to win a $100 Oyster House gift certificate. Onlookers can enjoy the fruits of the competitors’ labors; the oysters will be passed out to the crowd after each heat.

heads and tails
Rittenhouse Row is pleased to welcome our newest member Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique. Poised to transform the salon experience, Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique will exclusively offer blow dry and waxing services; the first boutique of it’s kind in Philadelphia.
Co-founded by Philly natives Jenne Doyle and Dana Morrison, Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique boasts “an upscale experience without the upscale pricing”. Having spent many years at top spas and salons in Philadelphia, Doyle and Morrison saw a void in Philadelphia’s market– a simple, affordable yet upscale salon experience for busy women.
“What we offer is an alternative to high priced salons – high quality services that are reasonably priced”, says Morrison.
Blow outs at the boutique can transform any hair style – loose and beachy, sleek and straight, full volume, or “anything else” – and all are achieved using plant-based Phyto hair care products. Full body waxing services are offered, including Brazilian wax, using a revolutionary,top-of-the-line hard wax (or blue wax) which removes 90% of the unpleasant pain and irritation generally associated with waxing. “A wax and a blow out are a good way to take a few minutes for yourself, and what’s best is you’ll leave looking and feeling fabulous”, adds Doyle.
Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique also offers customized packages for any type of event (birthday, bachelorette party, bridal shower, wedding parties, etc.).
Check out what its all about tomorrow, March 29th from 6-9PM at their grand opening party…

wine and dine
Le Castagne and Doorways Ltd. are proud to join forces with La Cucina at Gelso Bianco Cooking School to present a special evening of food and wine from Puglia, Italy on Thursday, February 23 .
For one night only, visiting chef Laura Giordano from Gelso Bianco will join resident chef Michael DeLone in the kitchen at Le Castagne to create a four-course dinner featuring the hearty and rustic cucina povera of the region. The distinctive Pugliese dishes, which showcase exceptionally fresh ingredients and un-fussy preparation, will be paired with with the dynamic and bold wines of the region, such as Primitivo, Negroamaro and Salice Salentino.
In Puglia, the “heel” of the boot, locally sourced seasonal cooking has long been a way of life. The region’s cuisine is based on homemade pastas and cheeses (like the delicious cream-stuffed mozzarella called burrata), as well as fresh vegetables, abundant seafood—Puglia boasts two coastlines, one along the Adriatic and the other on the Ionian sea—and, of course, copious amounts of Apulian olive oil. Two thirds of all of the oil consumed in Italy is produced in Puglia.
Aperitivo + hors d’oeuvres, 6:30pm – 7:30pm; Dinner at 7:30pm.
$70 per person (includes wine). One seating only, space limited.
To RSVP, call 484-416-0473 or email pugliadinner@metisseevents.com
Chef Laura Giordano has traveled throughout Italy and around the world working in restaurant kitchens and running catering businesses. She has lived in Milan, Perugia, Bologna, Edinburgh and London, but found her true culinary love in the Pugliese kitchen, where she draws on her deep grasp of the timeless local traditions that make the region’s cuisine so distinct. Chef Giordano, her partner Antonello Losito and Kit Burns, president and owner of European villa rental agency Doorways Ltd, will be on hand to chat with guests about Puglia as they enjoy region’s food and learn about what to do and where to stay when visiting.
