aww shucks
On Saturday, April 21 beginning at 2 p.m., popular raw bar and restaurant Oyster House (1516 Sansom Street, 215-567-7683) will host their third-annual Shucking Contest, featuring professional oyster shuckers from across Philadelphia competing for a $200 Grand Prize. An amateur shucking contest will follow the professionals, with guests hoping to earn a $100 Oyster House Gift Certificate. Admission to the shucking contest is $5 per person, and includes all the varieties of the shucked oysters as well as access to Oyster House’s bar and a special firkin of a local craft beer, which will be on a pay-as-you-go
basis.
“Oyster shucking is an art, and those who do it well rightly take pride in their ability,” says proprietor and third-generation restaurateur Sam Mink. “Last year, we had nine professional and amateur shuckers, and we can’t wait to see who takes home the prize this year.”
The professional shuckers, including competitors from Oyster House and others from renowned Philadelphia-area seafood houses, will be judged by UWISHUNU.com editor Allison Stadd, WHERE Philadelphia editor Kristina Jenkins, and celebrity photographer HughE Dillon on their speed and accuracy as they shuck their way through two dozen oysters, working in heats of three shuckers at a time. A one-second deduction will be made to each shucker’s overall time for each broken shell or ripped oyster. After a winner is crowned, amateur shuckers will face the same guidelines, working on one dozen oysters each for a chance to win a $100 Oyster House gift certificate. Onlookers can enjoy the fruits of the competitors’ labors; the oysters will be passed out to the crowd after each heat.

heads and tails
Rittenhouse Row is pleased to welcome our newest member Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique. Poised to transform the salon experience, Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique will exclusively offer blow dry and waxing services; the first boutique of it’s kind in Philadelphia.
Co-founded by Philly natives Jenne Doyle and Dana Morrison, Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique boasts “an upscale experience without the upscale pricing”. Having spent many years at top spas and salons in Philadelphia, Doyle and Morrison saw a void in Philadelphia’s market– a simple, affordable yet upscale salon experience for busy women.
“What we offer is an alternative to high priced salons – high quality services that are reasonably priced”, says Morrison.
Blow outs at the boutique can transform any hair style – loose and beachy, sleek and straight, full volume, or “anything else” – and all are achieved using plant-based Phyto hair care products. Full body waxing services are offered, including Brazilian wax, using a revolutionary,top-of-the-line hard wax (or blue wax) which removes 90% of the unpleasant pain and irritation generally associated with waxing. “A wax and a blow out are a good way to take a few minutes for yourself, and what’s best is you’ll leave looking and feeling fabulous”, adds Doyle.
Heads & Tails Beauty Boutique also offers customized packages for any type of event (birthday, bachelorette party, bridal shower, wedding parties, etc.).
Check out what its all about tomorrow, March 29th from 6-9PM at their grand opening party…
some green with those fries.
In early summer 2012, Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) plans to bring its Shake Shack to Philadelphia. One of NYC’s most acclaimed eateries and a fun and lively community-gathering spot, Shake Shack is a modern day “roadside” burger stand known for its delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, beer, wine and more.
Today, on the first day of spring, Shake Shack is proud to unveil a corner “park”– a living, green wall at the construction site of its future Philly home located at 2000 Sansom Street (corner of 20th and Sansom).
The living installation of greenery at the temporary work zone reimagines the form and function of the often uninspiring, plywood walls that surround the area, and invites the neighboring community to enjoy the lush foliage until the construction ends.
In 2001, Shake Shack was born in a park, sprouting from a hot dog cart in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite a success, and in 2004 Shake Shack officially opened as a permanent food kiosk – its ivy-covered green architecture designed to make it harmonious with the park and surrounding landscape.
Reflecting Shake Shack’s heritage, the living wall was designed and installed by
Philadelphia-based Shift_Design. It features an array of custom panels and planters made from recycled steel filled with varying types of ivy, seasonal flowers, trailing vines, and evergreen shrubs.
The plants and planters will continue to live on in the community after the wall comes down. Shake Shack will donate them to the Rittenhouse Square Flower Market for Children’s Charities. The non-profit organization hosts its signature French flower market in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, for the benefit of four annually-changing children’s health and welfare service organizations, as well as for the maintenance of the Square.
This year, the Flower Market will be dedicated to a celebration of mothers and children, and will be held Wednesday, May 9th and Thursday, May 10th, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during the week immediately preceding and as a tribute to Mother’s Day.

In Pennsylvania alone, nearly 26,000 women die each year from heart disease and stroke. These women are our wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends. Less than 60 percent of women recognize heart disease as the number 1 killer of women. The Philadelphia Go Red for Women movement, sponsored by Macy’s, Merck and Main Line Health, is working to decrease those numbers. Empower women to take charge of their heart, GO RED, and join the eforts to stop heart disease.
